About The Gullah Farmers Cooperative: The Gullah Farmers Cooperative was formed in 2010, and today represents many Gullah farm operations in coastal counties of South Carolina. It is the largest Black-owned agricultural cooperative in the Southeast, and prioritizes serving Black farmers. The Cooperative’s mission is to establish a profitable, significant local food market for Farmer Members who are honoring and continuing the agricultural traditions of our communities by growing fresh produce. The Cooperative’s facility on St. Helena Island provides wholesale packing, processing, aggregation, distribution and marketing services for current and new members, as well as other local farmers in the Lowcountry. The Business & Operations Manager Position The Business & Operations Manager will direct the business and sales activities of the Cooperative. The person in this position will work closely with the procurement and processing teams to ensure the smooth operation of the business, and to manage financial and performance systems, reports, and improvements. An understanding of farm culture, combined with a high-degree of orientation towards detail and deadlines, is key to effectively accomplishing the duties of the Business and Operations Manager. These duties include, but are not limited to: Marketing/Sales. Develop relationships with wholesale purchasers. Manage customer orders and customer development. Inventory, invoicing and payment systems. Develop and improve systems that manage weekly procurement prices, sales prices and product availability and customer orders. Ensure sales invoices, farmer payments are processed and connected to the bookkeeping system. Provide the processing and procurement team with receiving and packing data needed for daily operations. Financial systems and reports. Develop and improve systems to manage accounts and expenses, and document financial transactions to support the organization’s financial records. Ensure documentation of restricted, unrestricted, and time-tracked grants/expenses. Get documentation to bookkeepers each month, review missing materials and resolve issues. Work with bookkeepers to design reports that will be reviewed monthly regarding income and expenses. Compile draft financial reports and reimbursement requests to funders on a monthly basis, for review by the Administrative Director. Support the development of annual budgets and financial projects. Operations Management. Develop and manage programmatic subcontracts, tracking and reporting on deliverables. Coordinate the compilation and submission of financial and programmatic reports. Coordinate employee records, and applications and manage personnel files and payroll submissions. Business and Operational Performance. Identify and track key performance indicators in the areas of financial and operational efficiency. Develop recommendations for business and operational improvements. Support the development of performance goals and strategies needed to achieve results. Other duties as required. Qualifications & Requirements Five years’ experience in business and operational positions that require both leadership and hands-on operational responsibility. Two years’ experience in financial management, bookkeeping, accounting or a related field. Two years’ experience in a service-oriented, problem solving environment. Demonstrated high-level organizational skills, orientation to deadlines and details, and a high degree of motivation and comfort working independently within a collaborative leadership environment. Familiarity with and experience working with farmers from the Gullah culture strongly preferred. Ability to work with MS Office, excel and other basic computer functions. Valid driver's license at time of employment; ability to lift up to 50 lbs. as part of your job. Up to date COVID vaccine required Compensation The compensation range for this full-time, salaried position is $40,000 - $50,000, depending on relevant experience and education. Hoop House Fellowship - Description. The Hoop House Fellowship is an opportunity to get hands-on experience establishing a demonstration hoop house system that is geared towards high value specialty crop production. Success in hoop house operations requires detailed and consistent attention to the work of production, as well as strong command of markets, production schedules, pricing and sales strategy. One hoop house has been built on site at the Cooperative’s facility on St. Helena Island, with the goal of adding two additional hoop houses over the next year to support learning, demonstrations and production. Working 35 hours a week with guidance, the Fellow will source irrigation and production materials, coordinate the set-up of the hoop house, and ensure food safety protocols are in place. While gaining a comprehensive understanding of wholesale purchasing, pricing, product selection and succession planting, the Fellow will also build out crop production and sales projection plans. The Fellow will survey hoop house operations on multiple farms within the network, and support workshops, consultations and tours geared to enhancing farm productivity and profitability. This is an ideal opportunity to gain hands-on and business expertise that can support the development of future farm enterprises, community food systems, and consultancies. The ideal candidate will have: entrepreneurial motivation and interests in vegetable production; hands-on experience working in vegetable production; capacity to develop and maintain detailed spreadsheets to track financial, production and succession planting data. The Fellow will be able to lift 15 - 50 lbs, have a valid driver’s license upon hire, and have up-to-date COVID vaccines. Agribusiness Fellowship - Description. The Agribusiness Fellowship is an opportunity to get hands-on experience with the business of running a wholesale processing, aggregation and distribution business that connects small farmers to institutional buyers (school systems, grocery stores, food service companies). Managing sales, inventory, pricing and buyer relationships; developing and reviewing financial reports; and ensuring the financial success of this cooperative enterprise are critical elements of establishing a thriving market for small farmers. Working 35 hours a week with guidance, the Fellow will provide business support for the operations. The Fellow will help the Cooperative build its inventory, sales and pricing systems, and will work with the team to create financial reports and manage the administrative work of the business. The Fellow will also support key marketing and sales initiatives, including the build out of the Gullah Grown Brand, buyer cultivation, and more. Part-Time, Hourly, 1-3 days a week / St. Helena Island, SC About The Gullah Farmers Cooperative: The Gullah Farmers Cooperative was formed in 2010, and today represents many Gullah farm operations in coastal counties of South Carolina. The Cooperative’s mission is to establish a profitable, significant local food market for Farmer Members who are honoring and continuing the agricultural traditions of our communities by growing fresh produce. The Cooperative’s facility on St. Helena Island provides packing, processing, aggregation, distribution and marketing services for current and new members, as well as other local farmers. Delivery Driver - Job Description Delivery drivers have an important position at the Cooperative. They make sure that fresh vegetables are delivered to customers - while following the food safety and quality rules that make sure the vegetables stay fresh. Currently, delivery routes are generally running 1 - 3 days a week from the Cooperative’s facility on St. Helena Island to Charleston, with additional stops or routes possible going to Columbia, Bluffton and other areas within a 100 - 150 mile radius. Details: Route start times vary, as early as 4:30 am some days and as late as 6pm on others. The Cooperative truck is a 16ft reefer, with manual transmission. This position requires loading, unloading and organizing of the cargo, using an electric stacker (training provided), and load bars. Basic maintenance checks required for each trip. Driver Job Requirements At least one year delivery driving experience, preferably working with refrigerated trucks. Experience with food service is a plus. Ability to consistently lift and stack items with a weight of 15 - 50 lbs., and to work with loading equipment in accordance with safety standards. Ability to meet deadlines. Valid Drivers’ license and clean driving record upon hire. Valid CDL preferred. Up to date COVID vaccine required. Pay range for this job is $22 - $28 an hour. Working together, the Crew team inspects incoming product for quality, operates the wash/pack and processing equipment, and ensures that product is packed and ready for delivery. Specific duties include, but are not limited to: -Building and labeling boxes for holding vegetables. -Inspecting and pulling out different product items for quality, size and sort. -Ensuring that products move efficiently through the wash/process equipment line. -Packing products according to specifications. -Lifting and stacking produce boxes and related equipment with a weight of 15 - 50 lbs, and using hand-trucks, carts, and pallet jacks to move product and equipment. -Crew members must work efficiently, pay attention to detailed work, consistently achieve timing and quality targets, and comply with food safety and worker safety requirements. On the job training will be provided. Crew Member Job Requirements : -At least one year of employment experience, with experience in food service, warehouse distribution and/or farming is a plus. -Ability to consistently lift and stack items with a weight of 15 - 50 lbs., and to work standing up in an airconditioned and wet environment. -Success meeting deadlines, with motivation to complete detail-oriented work. -Ability to learn and apply product quality standards to produce, as well as food safety and worker safety rules. Farm Network Manager - Job Description The Farm Network Manager holds a vital position for the Cooperative, working every day to ensure that a greater number of farmers are effectively engaged with wholesale production, sales and resources. Driven by a growth plan that will significantly increase the number of GAP-certified producers and wholesale sales over the next year, the person filling this position is a highly motivated individual who is focused on outreach, growth, and the establishment of high-quality farmer support services. Specific duties include: Managing weekly purchasing, pricing, logistics. Implement quality control systems with farmers during product delivery at the warehouse, and coordinate with sales and operations regarding inventory matters. Work with farmers to maximize produce quality. Leading bi-annual crop planning meetings and maintaining the farmer production schedule. Providing wholesale readiness assessments on farm, working with farmers to develop and implement farm improvements. Develop and coordinate farmer workshops and consultations on wholesale readiness topics such as post-harvest handling and packing, greenhouse production, cool bot and cold storage construction, and food safety/GAP. Recruit and engage farmers in the Cooperative’s wholesale readiness program. Other duties as required. 20 - 30% local travel to farmers, farmer trainings, and relevant conferences and farm activities. Farm Network Manager Job Requirements At least two years’ on-farm production experience, preferably on a wholesale vegetable farm and/or working with farmers on post-harvest handling, packing and sales. Experience coordinating and leading farmer education and training events. Demonstrated understanding of food safety, post-harvest management and packing, produce quality standards. Demonstrated understanding of the historic and present impact that race and culture have on small farms and farm families in the South. Ability to consistently lift and stack items with a weight of 15 - 50 lbs.; experience with pallet jacks and hand trucks is a plus. Ability to work with Microsoft Office, including excel, and social media. Valid driver’s license at time of hire and up-to-date COVID vaccine required.
